This delicate painting indicates that Christchurch artist William Ernest Chapman painted in the Silverstream area. Whitemans Valley is situated near Pumpkin Cottage, although it was reached via Wallaceville. Chapman (d.1945) was a member of Christchurch’s Palette Club. In 1891 he resigned from teaching at the Canterbury School of Art to travel and successfully exhibited in Paris and New York. It is unclear whether he painted this prior to going overseas.
